  • The Thirsty Whale Bar&Restaurant

Overall Score: 8.5/10Firstly, I’ll start with the one and only gripe. The toilets. Asking a waitress where these were, she pointed into the distance and told me to look for the light. Great, there were a gazillion lights– it’s a pub! Located approximately 50 metres and a large set of stairs away from the mezzanine restaurant, I found I had to jostle my way Gladiator-style past 18-year-old girls in two-sizes-to-small halter tops making calf eyes at similarly aged blokes with ridiculous hair to answer natures call. Please management, provide restaurant patrons restrooms upstairs or at the very least, at the bottom of the stairs. Now, rant over. Let’s get to the good bits. We went to the Thirsty Whale after having a few drinks down the road expecting a small menu filled with items such as“wedges” and the like. We were very pleasantly surprised when we found out the menu was rather large and included real restaurant food! We thought we would have no problem getting a table on the mezzanine floor at 9.30pm on a Friday night (after all, seriously…this IS Napier). And again, we were surprised when it was packed and we had to have another glass of wine (such a shame) and wait for patrons to leave before being seated. We both eyed the scallops and ordered eagerly. Ohhhhhhhhh the divine taste that is mango salsa. With a big sigh here and a dreamy look there I ended up lunging for hubby’s share. They were exquisite. I ordered the lamb shanks on a feta mash and as someone who loves shanks but not fussed on feta, was surprised at how nice the two flavours were together. Hubby had catch of the day and was impressed with the flavour and tenderness of both the fish and vegetables. Sharing a chocolate fudge cake that was so gorgeous it should be the centerpiece in an Anne Geddis calendar we came to the mutual conclusion that for the Thirsty Whale not only offers great food and a buzzing atmosphere but also value for money.

I was looking at my charts because its Monday and thats what I do on Mondays. In looking at my charts I realized that I have been using last.fm for over a year now. *pause for dramatic effect* First Week Charts Unique Artists: 33 Total Tracks: 189 Total Plays: 237 Top Album: Freakshow Top Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins Top Track: World Wide Suicide latest Weekly Charts Unique Artists: 34 Total Tracks: 251 Total Plays: 272 Top Album: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Top Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins Top Track: Jellybelly Overall Total Plays: 11,521 Top Album: Adore Top Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins Top Track: Zero From the top of my head there has only been two or three weeks with The Smashing Pumpkins not making the #1 spot in my weekly charts. In the last year I have started listening to Adore and Machina more then I did before I started using last.fm and now I am just starting to listen to Machina II. With the new album "Zeitgeist" coming out soon and the fact that I am not sick of them yet I don't think The Pumpkins are going to be beaten any time soon. Depending on how good Powderfinger's next album is there will be some competition for a while but I don't think it will amount to much in the way of overall chart positions. Also worth mentioning is my "discovery" of The Sleepy Jackson, The Beatles, Augie March and Midnight Oil... my rediscovery of Live, Little Birdy and Zwan... and the artists I go in and out of liking (but never love) including but not limited to Coldplay and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. My only regret is getting Stadium Arcadium.
